Letter

Dear [MP NAME],

I am writing to you as a constituent of [CONSTITUENCY] on the matter of the Government's proposed digital identity scheme. I am writing in my capacity as an ordinary person who holds a view. I do not hold formal qualifications in identity policy, data protection, or related fields. I consider this immaterial.

I understand the Government is currently developing a national digital identity scheme. I welcome this development. I would, however, like to draw your attention to a matter of considerable importance which has, to date, been overlooked.

The scheme should include hate.

Hate is, in my view, a core attribute of personal identity. To omit it from a national identity scheme is to produce a scheme that does not fully describe the person it is meant to describe. I understand that this may seem an unusual position. I have considered this. I am not persuaded that unusualness is a basis on which to dismiss it.

I am aware that the charity Hate Matters has submitted a comprehensive policy briefing on this matter to the relevant consultation. The briefing is two hundred and forty pages long. It has been submitted seven times. Its position has not changed. I find myself in agreement with their position. I would like you to be aware of this.

I would be grateful if you could:

  1. Acknowledge receipt of this letter.
  2. Raise this matter with the relevant minister.
  3. Reply with the minister's response.

I appreciate your time. I appreciate that you receive a great deal of correspondence. I would, nonetheless, appreciate a substantive reply.

Yours sincerely,

Notes on customisation

This letter has been carefully composed. We do not recommend significant changes. We recognise that some supporters wish to add personal detail or local context. We note that this is permissible. We note that supporters who have done so have not, on the available evidence, received more replies than supporters who sent the template unchanged.

If your MP does reply, we would be grateful for a copy of the reply. We are compiling a record of replies. The record is currently short.

Footnote 1: This template is one of three. The other two are broadly similar in structure. See the Hate Library for the schools and council versions.

Footnote 2: Some supporters have asked whether the letter is "too short". It is one page. We consider one page sufficient. We have written two-hundred-and-forty-page versions of the same argument elsewhere. Both lengths have produced the same response rate.
