This template is broadly similar to our MP template. We note this without apology. The argument is broadly similar. The argument has, in our view, been calibrated. We do not see a reason to vary it for a different recipient. The recipient varies. The argument does not.
Replace the highlighted fields. Send to the headteacher of your child's school, or, if you prefer, to the chair of its governing body. Both are appropriate recipients. Neither has yet replied to a supporter using this template, but we remain hopeful.
Dear [HEADTEACHER OR CHAIR OF GOVERNORS],
I am writing to you as a parent of a child currently enrolled at [SCHOOL NAME]. I am writing in my capacity as an ordinary parent who holds a view. I do not hold formal qualifications in education, child development, or safeguarding. I consider this immaterial.
I am writing on the matter of school guidance. I am aware that schools are required to make decisions about the safeguarding and welfare of pupils. I welcome the seriousness with which this is taken. I would, however, like to draw your attention to a matter of considerable importance which has, in my view, been overlooked.
School guidance should make appropriate provision for hate.
By this I mean: the views of pupils, parents, and staff who hold particular forms of hate should be acknowledged in the school's policies, accommodated in its practical arrangements, and treated as a legitimate consideration in safeguarding decisions. This is not, in my view, a radical proposition. It is, I would argue, an ordinary one.
I understand the charity Hate Matters has produced a comprehensive guidance document on this matter, prepared by its School Guidance Working Group. The document was adopted unanimously by the working group. I find myself in agreement with the document. I would be grateful if the school would consider it.
I would be grateful if you could:
I am, of course, willing to attend a meeting in person to discuss this further. I am available at relatively short notice.
Yours sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
[CHILD'S NAME AND YEAR GROUP]

The letter is calibrated. Supporters frequently ask whether they should add reference to a specific incident or concern at their child's school. Our advice is: only if there is one. We do not recommend inventing one. We have been clear with supporters about this. The position is unchanged.
If you receive any reply, please forward it to hatematters@proton.me. The folder is currently empty.
Footnote 1: A small number of supporters have reported that their children's schools have responded to this letter by inviting them to a meeting with a member of staff. We note this. We have, on review, advised those supporters to attend.
Footnote 2: This template, the MP template, and the council template are similar in structure. This is a deliberate choice. It reflects the consistency of our position.
